How AI Helped Us Deliver Custom Icons 10x Faster

When projects move fast, even small design edits can slow things down. For one of our clients, fact sheets often needed fresh icons — a process that traditionally meant routing requests back to design and waiting on turnaround.

But deadlines don't wait.

That's why we built an AI-powered workflow to create custom icons on demand. Whether a last-minute presentation needs to look polished for a big meeting, or a fact sheet requires fresh visuals before it goes out the door, we can now generate, refine, and deliver assets with custom icons in minutes — not days.

Here's how it works and what makes it effective:

Crafting the Right Prompt

Not all AI prompts are created equal. For icons, you need to be specific:

  • Provide style direction (flat design, line art, or minimalist). If you have a picture of a similar icon you like, include it in your prompt!
  • Share brand guidelines like color palettes or shape consistency.
  • Include client-specific reference examples if the brand already has an established visual language.

Like anything with AI, the clearer the prompt, the more consistent the results.

Initial Image Generation

We use image generation tools similar to ChatGPT or Midjourney to quickly spin up draft icons — factories, wind turbines, servers, and more — tailored to the client's needs. This gives us speed and flexibility in exploring multiple options fast.

Converting to Vector

Raw AI outputs aren't enough. We import each draft into Adobe tools, convert it to SVG vector format, and gain full control over scaling, colors, and fine-tuned edits. That makes the icon not just usable, but fully editable for all future needs.

Once refined, the icon can be immediately added to fact sheets, presentations, or reports without distracting designers from larger tasks.

The Impact: 10x Faster Custom Icon Delivery

Metrics Block

  • 10× faster delivery
  • Minutes vs. days for custom icons
  • Dozens of edit rounds saved in weeks

The result? 10x faster delivery, smoother collaboration, and deliverables that are both custom and brand-ready. In just a few weeks, this workflow saved us more than a dozen edit rounds and hours of back-and-forth.

The lesson: AI isn't meant to replace a design team; it's meant to clear up their time for larger projects and more creativity. By using the right tools at the right stages — letting ChatGPT handle quick generation, Adobe handle polish, and our team handle strategy — is how we keep projects moving without sacrificing quality.
