In this post, we will discuss the newest social media platform on the block, GETTR, and how it fits into a so-called “parallel economy”.

GETTR is a micro-blogging social media platform that intends to compete with Twitter. Here’s everything you need to know about GETTR:

What Is GETTR?

The platform was launched on July 4th, 2021, by former Trump Aide Jason Miller, who claims it is “for everyone across the political spectrum” and touts its adherence to 1st Amendment principles.

As conservative creators and personalities continue to be shadowbanned and Twitter is under new leadership, censorship has intensified beyond prominent conservatives.

In November 2021, GETTR had 3 million total users and nearly 400,000 daily average users, but all of that was about to change in January of 2022, thanks to one podcaster.

Who Is on GETTR?

On January 2, 2022, comedian and podcaster Joe Rogan, who commands an audience of 11 million viewers, and 8 million Twitter followers, joined the platform after criticizing the recent crackdown on Twitter. With his first post being:

In the days after Joe Rogan joined the platform, GETTR saw a surge of 1 million new users bringing the total number of users up to 4 million, according to GETTR Global Communications Director Ebony Bowden.

Recently, CEO Jason Miller announced that GETTR has 6 million registered users across every continent except Antarctica.

Other GETTR users include politicians, cable news commentators, and celebrities, including Former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, NBA Player Enes Kanter, Comedian Rob Schneider, Comedian Russel Brand, FOX News Host Sean Hannity, Turning Point USA Founder Charlie Kirk, Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Former U.S. HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson, Comedian Steven Crowder, and Congressman Byron Donalds.

Many right-leaning news outlets are also on GETTR, including Daily Mail, Townhall, One America News Network, and Newsmax.

With the “gets” of Kanter, Gabbard, and Rogan to the platform, it seems GETTR has been more successful in attracting a broader spectrum of political opinions where its predecessor Parler failed.

The Good, the Bad, the Ugly of GETTR

Where the platform shines is with its “Live” section, allowing users to search and browse through Livestreams. Once a Livestream is selected, it will take you into a video player which features a live chat, allows easy rewind of the stream, or expands to a full screen. We found it much better than the clunky and frustrating video player Twitter uses for live streams.

Additionally, the platform has recently added a ‘
Vision’ section where users can scroll through videos, similar to Instagram Reels or Tik Tok. There is a section within ‘Vision’ where you have the option to see videos from the people you’re following or explore new videos and users to follow. They also have a ‘More’ section, where you have the option to view profile analytics, download the app, invite friends to the platform, or receive help.

Despite avoiding Parler’s pitfalls, GETTR is not without issues but has rapidly improved its UX.

The platform is still missing a Direct Message feature. Though you are able to repost, post, or like different posts, you still cannot directly message another user. Don’t worry, GETTR’s CEO, Jason Miller, says it’s coming soon!

That brings our attention to the best and worst thing about GETTR:  its User Interface. We found the user interface straightforward and familiar.

The UI is lacking a little in originalityーa tweet is just a ‘post,’ a comment is a comment. A retweet is a ‘repost.’

In the ‘Profile’ section, you will notice that while you are able to change your display name, you are unable to change your username at this time, even though this option is available on many other platforms. Lastly, there are some controversies worth mentioning with the platform. The first is hackers targeted the platform at launch, but as we’ve seen in recent years, even Twitter, with all of its security measures, is not immune to these attacks.

More recently, a controversy with one of the platform’s most prominent users, Joe Rogan, accused the platform of artificially boosting total followers to 9.1 million despite GETTR not having that number of users. CEO Jason Miller explained that this is due to the eventual rollout of cross-platform posting.

Can You Monetize GETTR?

The short answer: Not yet.

But CEO Jason Miller has stated that the platform does have plans to roll out multiple monetization options, including micro-tips and subscriptions for content creators.

In addition, the company has plans for revenue generation, including a merchandise store and something called ‘GETTR pay,’ which is set to be released summer 2022.

Should You Get on GETTR?

For a brand seeking to reach a broader audience than the heavily right-leaning audience that Parler provides, it may be wise to use GETTR as a component of its omnichannel marketing strategy.

In addition, a brand that often incorporates live video content could benefit from the seamless and frankly better Livestream integration than what Twitter currently provides.

With the launch of Donald Trump’s Truth Social App and Elon Musk’s potential takeover at Twitter, it will be interesting to see how the dust settles in the micro-blogging space between Parler, GETTR, and Truth Social.

For now, with Twitter cracking down more and it becoming more difficult to reach a conservative audience, having a diversified social media presence is a great idea.
